Direct stimulation of brain functions was studied in this double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in 2013. In this trial, researchers worked with frequencies up to 100 Hz and intensities between 0.4 and 1.4 mT.
Part of the healthy volunteers underwent pulsed magnetic therapy, while the remaining part in the control group completed the therapy with sham devices – blinded applications. After the treatment, pain threshold of each volunteer was tested with gradual heating of a thermode (hot bar) which they were holding in their non-dominant hand.
With this method, the study confirmed the hypothesis that pulsed magnetic field stimulation significantly increases the pain threshold and helps to endure transient pain. So besides the use of analgesic drugs, pain control can also be achieved by comfortable pulsed magnetic therapy.
